Today, we take a delightful journey to the garden of Tingshu Hu and Philip Zhao, nestled in the picturesque town of Dunstable, Massachusetts.
Previously featured in the latest issue of Fine Gardening magazine (#221), this vibrant haven is not just about colorful flora and thoughtfully designed hardscapes.
It also boasts a dynamic group of chickens that adds a unique charm to the ecosystem.
Chickens’ Role in the Garden
Tingshu and Philip proudly care for roughly 30 chickens, which play an indispensable role in enriching their garden.
As summer fades, these feathered friends are welcomed into the garden, where they feast on an abundant diet that includes flowers, leaves, seeds, and various insects.
The Prairie Fire Crabapple Tree
In the centerpiece of their backyard stands a striking Prairie Fire crabapple tree, heavy with brilliant red berries.
Small birds have begun to feast on the berries, but thankfully, they remain out of reach for the chickens.
To ensure her flock has a special treat during the winter months, Tingshu has plans to gather these luscious berries.
A Vibrant Ecosystem
During the warmer months, the chickens are kept within a designated yard, effectively tending to the surrounding fruit trees.
Their lively presence brings an additional layer of energy and vibrancy to the landscape.
We want to express our heartfelt thanks to Tingshu for giving us a glimpse into her endearing, eclectic flock.
Each new collection of photos from her garden deepens our fascination and appreciation for this one-of-a-kind retreat.
